Dear Loren,

Dan Navarette, our head of Customer Service, reports that one question we receive is about the difference between our "Modular" and our "Skin" modular systems. In this month's newsletter we shed some light. (BTW: click here if you want to see a really great thread about Dan on Sportsshooter.)
Belt System: Modular or Skin?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Modular belt systems are an excellent, versatile way for you to pack your camera bodies, lenses and accessories. With our Modular system and our Skin system, you can select how lightweight and how much protection you desire based on your preference.
With both systems, with our "Rotate and Lock" design you can either lock the pouches "in place" or you can us the hook and loop fastener on the flap of the pouch to secure it to the belt line. Keeping the pouch "in place" has the advantage of securing the pouch to a specific location on your Skin Belt, Pro Speed Belt, or Steroid Speed Belt. Once in place, you now have your gear in the exact location of choice.
Attaching a pouch solely with the hook and loop fastener allows you to rotate your pouches freely around the belt to change the weight distribution on your waist. One of the greatest benefits of our belt systems is that they keep the weight of your gear on your waist and off your back. You also have the added benefit of greater mobility and quick gear retrieval when you need it.
We have designed two distinctive modular belt systems. They are:
Modular System image
Modular Set (right) -- We have produced a wide variety of pouches and cases for this belt system to accommodate the lenses and accessories most often used by photographers. These pouches and cases can be bought individually or in our 6-piece Modular Set. This set includes the Large Lense Drop In (holds an ultra wide-angle lens), the Lens Changer 35 (holds a 24-70 mm 2.8), and the Lens Changer 75 Pop Down (perfect for a 70-200 mm 2.8 lens). Have a flash? You also get the Lightning Fast for your SB-800 or equivalent. You also receive the Lens Changer 50 (holds zoom lenses, such as the 16-35 2.8 and 17-40, with the lens hood attached) and the Speed Changer for all of your accessories. Overall, this 6-piece set is an excellent way to get started on building your modular belt system
Skin Set imageSkin Set (right) -- This non-padded, lightweight, 5-piece modular system allows you to organize your gear on all Think Tank belts while working quietly. With the Silencer Flap there are no hook and loop fasteners "scratching" when you open them. In contrast to the Modular system, these bags have no foam. The set includes the Skin 50 (for zoom lens such as the 16-35 2.8 with hood in position), Skin 75 Drop Down (holds larger lens such as the 70-200 2.8 with hood reversed, or "pop-down" for hood in position), Skin Double Wide (holds two larger lenses such as the 70-200 2.8 with hood reversed and 24-70 2.8 with hood in position, in one unit), Skin Strobe (for your SLR flash), and Skin Chimp (the perfect solution for carrying one digital SLR body, as well as other SLR equipment).
While the bags are interchangable on our belt systems, photographers tend to select one style of modular system or the other. Those who seek that extra layer of protection for their expensive gear prefer the Modular system because of the foam padding. Those who prefer being able to "compress" their belt system into their travel bags so that it takes up the minimum amount of space while in transit, prefer the Skin system. It really depends on your personal preferences.
One secret professional photographers use with both belt systems is that they figure out what shooting situation they are about to enter and pre-load it with the gear and bags they anticipate needing. That way when they hit the ground they just extract the belt system from their roller or transportation backpack and strap it on, ready to shoot.
Phase One 60 MEGAPIXEL digital back!!!
I am not the biggest fan of 6x4.5 digital format for medium format cameras. Maybe that is why I have only rented them for shoots.
Phase One have recently came out with its new 60 Megapixel destroyer. With a wide ISO range (50-800) and 8984 x 6732 pixels with 1 frame per second Phase one has taken another stride to stay ahead of the competition. This just days after Hasselblad made the 50 megapixel announcement. With a price tag of just under $42,000 thats $1440.00 per megapixel, I don't think I will be reaching for my check book just yet but! I will try the Phase one out on my Hassy as soon as I can. Now if they can just make an actual 6x6 format (8984 x 8984). Let the Pixel wars continue...
Dali Lama at Quest Field
Photo By Matt Freedman
A BIG thanks to Matt Freedman for taking this photo of me. Having the opportunity to photograph the Dali Lama at Quest Field in Seattle was quite an experience. I truly enjoyed seeing some old friends from the Seattle Times, Seattle P-I and the likes. Too many to name but you know who you are. You can see from the photo we were packed in pretty tightly but that is part of what makes it great is that everyone worked very well with one another. Even helped out one another when things came crashing down, meaning cameras and tripods. From my experiences this is not typical. I suppose it might have been an effect of the Dali Lama who creates peace just by being in his presence. More photos to come of the events and the Dali Lama in the near future. Oh, yes I am manually focusing with my thumb. :)
Of course I have to mention the Adventure Vest that I am wearing. I was the only one to come into the stadium with out the need of a bag lugged over my shoulder and I had a chair I could sit in too. Check out the video about the Adventure Vest.
Profoto Compact 600R and Innovatronix invertor
©2008 LorenCallahan
A quick shot of the set up of the test with Whitney Egbert from Ryan Agency in Portland. Ended up not using the XT 1200 innovatronix power pack with my Profoto Compac 600R's. Just plugged them in to the wall. You can check out the site, www.innovatronix.com. I realized with the help from fellow photographer and ASMP V.P. Ric Peterson and the guys at Glazers that the Profoto Compac 600Rs having built in Pocket Wizard remotes some how don't work perfectly with this particular battery. On the other hand the 600's without the built in P.W. remotes seem to worked great as is Ric's experience. GO figure, technology...
Do you know?
Photo by Loren Callahan ©2008
Getting away is always great for the senses. And did I ever need it! So the passed weekend headed up to Whistler B.C. and took some R&R on the slopes. This photo has not been manipulated in anyway other than adding color correction and saturation. I always like to to create or find a photo within the camera instead of manipulating it in Photoshop. So the first person to correctly guess how this photo was shot will receive a new 2 GB Compact flash card from Sandisk. Happy guessing!!!
ASMP Strictly Business 2
Traveling down to LA is always a lot of fun for me for assignments. This time I went for a business update at the American Society of Media Photographers "Strictly Business 2" seminar. If you are an amature or a seasoned pro photographer this two day event will give you an immense amount of updated knowledge of how to run, market and promote you photography business. It is well worth it and is is very inexpensive. The speakers in LA were Leslie Burns-Dell'Acqua, Blake Discher, John Harrington, Judy Herrmann, and the quarkie and amazing artist Sean Kernan.
Motion Sicknes
I recently took a trip to Bali, Indonesia and Malaysia to photograph my clients wedding. I have always had trouble with motion sickness especially on airplanes and I have found an organic solution to my problem. It is really complicated so listen up. Ready? Ginger! It is that simple. And it gets better. It comes in a pill form that you can get at most supplement stores. I get mine from Clark's Pharmacy in Redmond WA.(425) 881-0222, 15615 Bel Red Road, Bellevue, Washington 98008. They have the best homeopathic and organic meds I have found in the Puget sound. I just take to in the morning and two at night a few days before my flight and throughout my trip (for the flight back) and I am set for a motion sickness fee trip!
